This year’s Miami Beach Bowl between Tulsa and Central Michigan is the lone bowl game on Monday, Dec. 19 during bowl season. Both teams had two very
different paths as to how they got to this bowl.

Let’s start with Tulsa. The Golden Hurricanes opened the season looking like they would contend for the American Athletic Conference title. The team went undefeated in non-conference play other than a loss to Ohio State in Week 2. However close losses to Houston and Navy, which were both decided by a combined nine points, knocked them out of the division race near the end of the season.

Central Michigan beat No. 22 Oklahoma State during the second week of the season, but the referees admitted afterwards that game-winning Hail Mary never should have counted. Things went downhill for the Chippewas at the end of the season, losing four out of their final five games to bring their record to 6-6 on the season.

Three things to know

1. Football in a baseball stadium: The Miami Beach Bowl represents one of college football’s rare, but still existing traditions: Football games being played in baseball stadiums. The Miami Beach Bowl, which has only been around for a couple of years, is played from the Marlins Park, where the Miami Marlins play during baseball season.

2. This game is historically high-scoring: Yes, the game is only two years old, but still! Western Kentucky and South Florida put up a combined 80 points in 2015, and Memphis and BYU casually dropped 103 the year before that. Hey, if you want people to watch a bowl game in a baseball stadium in Florida, you might as well let it be exciting.

3. Central Michigan hasn’t won a bowl in four years: That last time the Chippewas won a bowl game was in 2012 with a 24-21 victory over Western Kentucky in the Little Caesar’s Bowl. CMU made it to the Quick Lane Bowl last year, but lost to Minnesota.
